Types of Christmas Cakes


Cakes that use cheese in some form or the other are popularly known as cheese cakes. The different kinds of cheese that can be used are cream cheese, ricotta, mascarpone etc. Cheese cakes are sweet and have a highly sweetened crust. The flour content used in cheese cakes can vary from very little to being negligible. Cheese cakes have been around since a long time. They were made in Ancient Greece. Cheese cakes have a touch of honey added to them, which gives these cakes an extra sweetened taste.

One of the most common cakes being very popular now days are the sponge cakes. These cakes are easy to make, take less time and the basic equipment involved is also very simple. Sponge cakes are the first of the kind of cakes that belong to the no yeast baked cakes. They only rely on the air bubbles present in the dough that help the cake to rise and expand. The air bubbles are trapped in the matrix of proteins that is usually formed when eggs are beaten. So here no leavening agents are added as the air bubble mechanism does the job. But sometimes little bit of leavening agent like baking powder or other chemicals are added just to be on a safer side. Many Italian and Jewish cakes come under the category of sponge cakes. For example, pan di Spagna. Some of the french like Genoise also come under this category. Sponge cakes that are highly decorated and garnished are commonly known as gateau. Gateau is the french word for cakes. Sponge cakes are beautified with exquisite, delicious and mouth watering toppings.

The ultimate combination of eggs, baking powder and butter gives us what is commonly known as butter cakes. Butter cakes have a moist and smooth texture. Devil’s food cake and pound cakes which are very famous and reknowned come under the category of butter cakes.

Another category of yummy and delicious cakes are the Ruske Kape cakes. These are chocolate cakes which are round. Ruske Kape cakes are garnished and decorated with coconut giving them an extra dark and rich taste. These cakes originated in Serbia and Bosnia which are a part of the Balkan region.

Apart from the above classifications, cakes can also be divided or classified into different categories based on their contents for example whether the cake is flourless or whether it is a fruit cake, and on their accompaniment, like if they are coffee cakes or some other.

Now a days cake mixes are present in the market which contains all the ingredients. One has to only add certain things like eggs and butter.
