Santa and Christmas

The best memory one associates with Christmas is that of Santa Claus. Children love him because he brings plenty of gifts in his huge sack and slips into houses in the middle of the night, has some cookie and milk and is gone before you can catch him! There has been a lot of speculation, fantasizing, and myth making surrounding this somewhat mysterious figure. But Santa Claus is synonymous with Christmas, and one without the other seems somewhat incomplete.

He is known by different names in different communities and cultures. The most common name by which Santa is known is Kris Kringle. You may have also heard of other familiar names attributed to him like Saint Nicholas, and Father Frost. Some of the other not so heard names of Santa are Babbo Natale, Sinterklaas, Saint Basil and Père Noël among several others. We have come to associate the figure of Santa with a burly old man with white beard and glasses, wearing a red and white robe, which is completed with the reindeer that draws his carriage. This popular Santa Claus image is the result of the work of the popular cartoonist named Thomas Nast. His definition of Santa visually became the popular accepted form that the figure is best known as.

What makes the figure of Santa Claus really special is the fact that he is a bringer of gifts. Christmas is always associated with Christmas shopping and Christmas gifts. And it is always Santa who brings the children whatever they wish for. There are several notions surrounding the entire concept of gifts that Santa brings with him. It is accepted and believed that there are a group of elves in the North Pole who work day and night to make these millions of gifts that are to be delivered single handed by Santa every Christmas.

He has been immortalized in many a work of fiction, ranging from cinema to songs. The figure of Santa is so extremely popular because he creates a sense of magical aura that gives you a sense of hope. You don’t necessarily have to be a child to believe in Santa because he is a symbol of genuine goodness and kindness, and we all need to believe in figures like him to cling on to a sense of definite hope in life.

The reason he has become so popular in modern culture is because of the fact that he loves children so much. In this fast paced world where there is a mad scramble for power, money and fame, the little things of life are often forgotten. Kids maybe neglected while the less fortunate also suffer. The best part is that Santa loves everyone and ensures that there is a sense of faith and magical hope in every individual which makes Christmas appear all the better. Xmas is all about Christmas trees and Christmas decorations where people get together and have a wonderful time with people they love and cherish, and Santa adds a special distinct touch.
