The entire tradition of using candy canes as a form of decoration originated in Europe. Until in 1847 August Imgard used the sweet sugary cane sticks in his Christmas tree in America, and little did he know that this decoration would become so popular and almost become synonymous with the charm and beauty of Xmas. The hook shaped candy is almost perfect as Christmas decorations because they come in white with red stripes which are the primary colors of the festive season in general. Modern interpretation claims that the J shape of the candy cane stands for “Jesus”. Despite some people trying to enforce this kind of a reading to this sweet, no evidence has yet been found supporting their arguments.

The mistletoe and holly are two different species of plants that have become a symbol for Christmas almost. The holly is much favored because it looks amazing once it is grouped together for the Xmas decoration. The mistletoe on the other hand if hung during Christmas has a complete romantic overtone to it. A male and female who meet under the mistletoe are supposed to kiss as a traditional Christmas ritual.

Perhaps the most important association with Christmas is Santa Claus. When you go Christmas shopping, you’ll find him in your favorite book store or gift store listening to the wishes of children about what to bring them for Christmas. Known by several other names like St. Nicholas and Kris Kringle, Santa is extremely popular with the children and no Christmas fun and celebration can possibly be complete without the presence of Santa. Children leave out cookies and milk by the fireside at night and hang socks from the fireplace, only to wake up in the morning and find plenty of gifts. Santa visits every child in one night only, riding in a carriage drawn by the reindeer!

Welcoming in the Yuletide Spirit

Sample image A good way to start is to burn a fire in the fireplace every evening, and encourage everyone in your family to gather around. You all don’t necessarily need to talk, the children could do homework, you could write out your Christmas cards, your parents could read the newspapers – the idea is to just be together. Hang the stockings up on the mantelpiece, and arrange the Xmas cards – this will drive home the idea that Christmas is in the air. Hang up some holiday wreaths as well.
