The significance and perception of humans of bringing a decorated living evergreen tree or an artificial tree home, is, that it is a symbolic representation that life has to still go on even it is dark and cold. It symbolises the continuation of life which is not so easy in winters but still a christmas tree full of lights gives you hope and strength to carry on and enjoy life to the fullest. The choice of decorating a christmas tree has been adopted by people all over the world.
The winter holidays are not only important for only Christians. They are equally important for people of other religions as well. Christmas is no more a chrisitian festival; it is now a human festival with people all over the world celebrating it with joy. The Christmas trees are decorated with a number of things. But one of the most important accessories are the Christmas lights. Lighting was originally done by using many different candles. Candles of different sizes and shapes were used. The lights on the Christmas tree celebrate the entry of light in to the darkness and coldness of winters. It is said that the roots of the Christmas trees are Christian.
Therefore, these roots are called as Christian roots. Christmas and the lights around it, the colorfulness and joy around helps people to celebrate the theme and belief of life over death, and of entering of light in the world full of darkness. Most of the religions and cultures celebrate this belief at the time of Christmas. The Christmas tree signifies the presence of life in the dark and cold winter. The christmas tree symbolises light in darkness, hope of the spring season that is soon to come, hope of life in winter just like what baby Jesus does at the time of his birth. The actual date may not be brought into consideration though. The adoption of the custom of erection of Christmas trees across all climates and cultures has been phenomenal. The celebrations are done by people of all religions all over the world with equal enthusiasm.
Pohutukawa trees also popularly and commonly known as natural Christmas trees are found in New Zealand. These trees generally bloom in New Zealand at Christmas time only. The pohutukawa trees naturally have their branches covered with green foliage and red colored flowers that they naturally look like decorated Christmas trees. They need not be decorated with other accessories except for lights. In New Zealand, these trees are used at the time of Christmas and they serve as Christmas trees to the locals living there. Christmas trees were banned. This custom was then again reinforced in the year 1935. Christmas tree became the attribute of the New Year holidays and the symbol of Bethlehem was also crowned on the Christmas tree in the form of a big star on the top. Figures of bicycles, airplanes, space rockets were used to decorate the tree.
