Christmas is a festival which is celebrated all over the world with a lot of passion. All families celebrate this day together. The most unique and exqusite thing about Christmas is the Christmas tree. When a living or an artificial tree is decorated with streamers, ribbons, bells, stars, gifts, paper cuttings, lights etc. it is called a christmas tree. This tradition of decorating a christmas tree has been here since a very very long time. Christmas lights and many different and colorful ornaments are also used to decorate Christmas trees. Peole start decorating Christmas trees way before Christmas. Children are specially very fond and enthusiastic about decorating a huge christmas tree.

As history tells us the custom and the tradition of the Christmas tree was opposed because a christmas tree has pagan origins. An everygreen conifeerous tree is normally brought home or if its size is very large it is kept it in the open. The top of the Christmas tree always has a big star or an angel. The star or the angel on top of the Christmas tree represents the host or group of angels also popularly known as the Star of Bethlehem, which is very famous and comes from the Nativity story. The custom or the tradition of having a christmas tree at home or in the open that is outside the house goes back to the 16th century. The concept all started in Germany. Though it started in Germany is confirmed but we cannot single out one inventor or discoverer as we call it, or any single town or place where the whole concept originated.

The first ever Christmas tree was a huge, very large pine tree. This pine tree was erected in the region of Aslace in Germany in the year 1521. You can very well imagine how ancient the origin of Christmas trees has been. After this there was a rapid and very quick spread of the tradition and custom of erecting a christmas tree during the festive season of Christmas, all over the world. It all started in Germany and then spread to other parts of the world. In the year 1539, in the Cathedral of Strasbourg there was an erection of a christmas tree. This can be checked in the church records. During that time the guilds were the ones that started erecting a christmas tree in front of their individual guild halls. The Christmas tree was beautifully decorated with dates, cheese, nuts, paper flowers, apples, pretzels etc.

Many such Christmas trees were made and erected in front of different guild halls especially so that small children, specifically of the guilds family can collect the different and wonderful dainties on the day of Christmas itself. In the year 1597, in the town of Basel, tailor apprentices carried a christmas tree decorated with cheese, nuts, pretzels, dates, paper flowers, apples all around the town. People also thank Martin Luther to a certain extent and give him the credit for the idea of decorating the tree with lights.
